Josef’s for “National Swiss” is a Can’t Miss!
Swiss National Day is celebrated in Switzerland (and elsewhere!) every year on August 1st. The date marks the foundation of the Swiss Confederacy in the late 1800s, and is marked by parades, fireworks, bonfires, and – you guessed it – food!
As our founder Josef Brunner is an Austrian native himself, we have a wholesale interest and respect in various “celebration days” held in Eastern and Western Europe. And when Swiss National Day draws near – our award winning Swiss Bratwurst sausage takes front and center!
When discussing “Praise for our Provisions,” the Swiss Brat frequently takes center stage. So what’s the hype about? Read on!
A Pension for Pork Products
In the olden days, farming livestock – pigs in particular – was a big part of Swiss society infastructure. As such, people consumed a lot of pork products! Sausage became such a staple of Swiss diets, in the 1500s a pastor from Zurich advocated for sausage to be permissible to eat during Lent observance (when most Christians are instructed to abstain from eating meat entirely!)
Swiss sausage fair is a fantasia of different products – ranging from short and stubby (the “Cervelat“) to rather large (the “Boutefas“) to products with names we won’t even try to pronounce (the “Saucisson Neuchâtelois“).
One of the most well known sausages – carried in Josef’s suite – is the St. Galler Bratwurst. This laudable link is actually a mixture of pork and veal with the usual cache of delicatable spices and seasons, plus the unique inclusion of milk, which gives the sausage its white color.
Who or What or Where is “St. Galler?”
Not a man (that we are aware of) but rather a ‘canton’ … “St. Gallen” to be precise. A ‘canton’ is to Switzerland as a ‘state’ is to America.
Ever territorial and prideful of their meat products, in the 1438 statutes of the Butchers’ Guild of St. Gallen issued an edict that their titular bratwurst sausage MUST be produced with veal, bacon, spices and fresh milk. This core recipe has not changed since, however and as always, the Josef’s team adds our own distinctive flair!
Made in the St.Galler style, Josef’s Swiss Style Bratwurst is made with pork and veal, and contains a special blend of spices combined with milk and egg, giving it an ultra smooth and creamy texture. Traditionally pan-fried but also fantastic grilled. Pairs great with potato salad, but – as it’s a common street food – saddle this sausage up on a St. Galler role with a dollop of mustard! (Sure… you can put ketchup on it, too. We suppose!)
For Swiss National Day… Accept No Substitutes
Old world recipes meet contemporary craftsmanship… savor every bite!
But of course, enjoying Josef’s Swiss Style Bratwurst needn’t be confined to just Swiss National Day.
It’s a stellar ‘any time’ meat – but do keep an eye to your Swiss watch! We tend to sell out quickly!
